Drifter arrested after cow assaulted

Police call it a cowardly act against Sedala the cow at Toronto's Riverdale Farm. A Toronto man is under arrest for allegedly having sex with the pregnant Jersey cow last week and refusing to stop.
Employees at the farm on Winchester St. had to repeatedly scream at a man to dismount the animal, Toronto Police Sgt. Rita Boehm said.
Police had to be called to take the man away.
Employees said the man refused to dismount Sedala, claiming he was assisting the animal in giving birth.
Sedala isn't due for two months and is now recovering from the ordeal.
After the man finally dismounted, he allegedly punched an employee on the shoulder before entering a horse's stall, where he again refused to leave, police said.
"It can be particularly dangerous in a horse stable," one employee said.
Police said the man was coaxed into leaving the horse stable and then allegedly hit a worker with a beer bottle.
David Kottaris, 28, of no fixed address, has been charged with assault with a weapon and cruelty to animals.

Man Accidentally Killed When Posing As Piñata For Kids
MEXICO CITY -- A 24-year-old Mexican man is dead after reportedly playing a human piñata for some children.
A newspaper, Reforma, said the man was standing on a beam with a rope loosely tied around his neck and ropes tied around his hands and feet.
He was letting his younger brother and sister swing at him with sticks but lost his balance while trying to avoid being hit. He strangled when the rope tightened around his neck.

Corpse at busy intersection in Osaka, Japan ignored for two months

TOKYO (AP) - Police in western Japan said Thursday a man's dead body was ignored by crowds on a busy downtown street corner for two months before a taxi driver finally alerted authorities.
The body, believed to be that of a homeless man in his late 60s or early 70s, was found in front of a popular department store in the crowded downtown area of Osaka, Japan's second-largest city. A police official said it was partially decomposed by the time authorities collected it earlier this month. The official said the deputy chief of the local police precinct reported the corner is among the busiest in the city, with about one million people passing through the area each day.
The official, who requested anonymity, said the cause of death had not been determined but foul play was not suspected.
He said the taxi driver reported finding the body Dec. 4.

Man Decapitated In Rescue Attempt

A construction worker was decapitated when co-workers tried to dig him out of a collapsed ditch with an excavating machine, officials said.
The 39-year-old man, whose name was not released, became trapped in the ditch Monday afternoon at the intersection of Taylor Street and DeGroot Place on Staten Island. Colleagues tried to free him and another trapped worker with a backhoe, accidentally severing the first man's head.
Workers had dug the 16-foot trench as a part of project to connect houses on Staten Island to a sewer line. Its walls collapsed after the two men went inside.
It had not yet been determined whether the man died because of the decapitation or when the trench's walls collapsed, said Paul Iannizzotto, a fire department spokesman.
The other worker, a 66-year-old man whose name was not released, was rescued after firefighters arrived at the scene and was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital with minor injuries, police said.
The Formica Construction Co. of Staten Island had been given a permit to dig the trench, according to Ilyse Fink, a spokeswoman for the city's building department. She said the company would be issued at least one violation, for failing to properly reinforce the trench's walls.

10-Year-Old Killed While Shoveling Snow Near Tiger Cage
MILLERS CREEK, N.C. -- A 10-year-old Wilkes County boy shoveling snow was killed on Sunday when a 400-pound Bengal tiger dragged the child into its cage.
The sheriff's office said the boy's uncle shot and killed the tiger after it attacked Clayton James Eller, who died of wounds to the head, neck and chest.
Wilkes County Sheriff Dane Mastin said Clayton had been using a shovel to push snow off the apron of a swimming pool near the tiger's cage.
The boy's uncle, James Marshall Eller, was working on a car nearby when he heard Clayton scream. He saw the tiger dragging Clayton into its cage, then tried to get the tiger to release the child. When it didn't, he went into the house to get his gun. He shot the tiger twice.
Mastin says Ruth Bynum of the Millers Creek community owned the tiger. She's the sister of Clayton's mother, who was at work Sunday afternoon.

Man eats nephew's head
Nairobi - A Kenyan man has been arrested after allegedly decapitating his infant nephew and eating parts of the severed head after a row with the boy's mother, police said on Tuesday.
"The man chopped off the head of a young child using a panga, tapped and sucked blood and then drunk it, before starting to eat part of the head," Rift Valley deputy police chief Peter Leiyan said.
"Police were alerted by the wailing mother and neighbours and we arrested the suspect while he was boiling the head to drink the soup as well as eat it," in a village in Koibatek district on Saturday, Leiyan added.
The man's motives were being investigated, said police, adding that he had no known history of cannibalism.
Koibatek Police chief Maurice Kiplagat said the suspect attacked the one-year-old boy after fruitless attempts to send his mother back to her estranged husband.
"They quarrelled and the suspect stormed into his father's house, armed himself with a machete and chopped off the boy's head," Kiplagat told the East African Standard newspaper.
As the mother ran away screaming, neighbours responded swiftly and found the man quietly seated in the kitchen waiting for soup to boil, the Standard said in a front-page story.
Girl, 6, locked in dryer for weeks at a time
OTTAWA—An Ottawa woman has been convicted of locking a 6-year-old girl in a clothes dryer, where the girl ate, slept, urinated and defecated, for weeks at a time.
Ontario Court Judge James Fontana, who heard the case over 24 days spread over more than two years, convicted the 41-year-old woman of forcibly confining the girl in the dryer and failing to provide the necessities of life for a child.
The girl was in the woman's care because the child's biological mother was unfit to handle the troublesome youngster. The girl is now back with her biological mother.
Fontana also convicted the woman of two counts of assault for hitting her son repeatedly with a paint stick and slamming his head against a wall.
The woman was acquitted of six other charges: abandonment, assault and criminal negligence causing bodily harm relating to the girl, and criminal negligence causing bodily harm, failure to provide the necessities of life and forcible confinement relating to her son.
The woman, who can't be named to protect the identity of the children, will be sentenced in February.
During the trial, court heard contradictory testimony from witnesses. Children's Aid workers, a doctor and other professionals who saw the girl when she was with the woman in 1996 and '97 found no evidence of abuse. In the end, Fontana said he relied on the testimony of the woman's teenage daughter, who corroborated much of the girl's testimony.
Fontana, who heard the case without a jury, also didn't get a chance to look at the dryer. The machine was removed from the scene long before the allegations were made, thereby denying the possibility of forensic evidence.
The child said she lived in the dryer in every sense. She said sometimes she stayed in there so long she had trouble walking afterwards.
She said the incidents took place when she lived with the woman between Jan. 1, 1996 and Dec. 31, 1997. The woman's younger son, now 12, said he, too, was abused by his mother around the same time.

December 10, 2003 -- After placing his penis on a kitchen table, computer expert Bernd-Jergen Brandes issued that unthinkable command to German cannibal Armin Meiwes.
A home video made by Meiwes, 42, detailed the sickening events that followed on March 10, 2001.
The cannibal chopped at the organ, but failed to sever it.
Writhing in pain, Brandes, 43, demanded that Meiwes get a sharper knife.
He did - and completed the unspeakable act.
Meiwes bandaged the wound with towels and Brandes sat upright in a chair, his eyes glazed over.
Meiwes began cooking the severed penis - sautéing it with garlic, salt and pepper.
Brandes had his rare.
"We had agreed to eat it half and half, but he was getting faint and couldn't wait for his half to be cooked through," the cannibal said. "So he tried to eat it more or less raw and of course, it was too tough. He was furious."
Meiwes then led Brandes upstairs to a first-floor bathroom in his half-timbered home near Kassel in central Germany, leaving him to "bleed out" in a bath.
As Brandes' final hours ticked down, the cannibal watched one of the many Disney movies he owns.
Brandes managed to recover some strength.
"He got out and said, 'If I survive until the morning, let's have my testicles for breakfast,' " Meiwes said.
The computer expert did not survive until morning.
Ten hours after Brandes' manhood was cut off, Meiwes laid him out on a bench in "the butchery," a cold and sinister room - painted red and black.
Then he repeatedly plunged a knife into Brandes' throat.
The final scene shows Meiwes cradling his victim's head and saying, "Forgive me."
The video, 4 1/2 hours long, was edited down to 90 minutes before being shown at Meiwes murder trial in Kassel, which is expected to continue until at least mid-January.
Meiwes, a computer technician and former soldier, admits killing Brandes, a computer software expert from Berlin.
But he insists that Brandes, who answered his Internet ad for a victim, wanted to be eaten and die.
Prosecutors claim the killing was sexually motivated and Meiwes exploited a mental disorder that left Brandes with a death wish.
On the witness stand, Meiwes said he decapitated and dismembered Brandes' body and stored the parts in a freezer.
Then - during a long summer of barbecues - he ate 66 pounds of Brandes.
Saying he was "internalizing" a loving friend, he described it as almost a religious event.
"On the night of the killing, I had the hope that part of his body would become part of mine," he said. "It was like Holy Communion."
Finally, his supply of meat began to run out and he started searching the Internet for another victim.
"I hope I will soon find another victim. The flesh is almost all gone," he said in an e-mail to a friend.
Explaining the e-mail in court, he said, "It was still my wish to slaughter a human - in other words, to dissect a body."
Meiwes said he intended to share Brandes' remains with his next victim before killing him.
But he never got that far. He was arrested a year ago.
Meiwes said Brandes "disappointed me in many ways."
He said the computer expert lied about his age, claiming to be 36, and did not want to get to know the cannibal better before his death.
Meiwes insisted Brandes was a willing participant in his killing.
"I saw the killing as helping him, helping him to die, helping him to kill himself," he said. "He knew he could have stopped at any time, but he didn't. He wanted to die and to be eaten. He told me he had the desire to be slaughtered and eaten since he was a child. He was very intelligent and I didn't see any sign he was disturbed."
Still, Meiwes said, the slaying was "the most terrible moment in my life, far worse than I had imagined in my fantasies." He wished he had seen a psychologist about his cannibal fantasies, he said, because "things wouldn't have gone so far."
Meiwes said he met Brandes on the Internet after placing an ad that read, "If you are 18 to 25, you are my boy. Come to me, I'll eat your delicious flesh."
He said he received 400 replies and chose Brandes after a long e-mail relationship. Recipes found in his home included "penis in red wine" and "breaded young man's liver."
Meiwes faces life in jail if convicted.
